Total laryngectomy involves the removal of a patient’s voice box and results in the loss of voicing capability. To restore the ability to speak, a voice prosthesis must be be implanted. This team has developed a device for secondary tracheo-esophageal puncture (TEP) to post-laryngectomy patients in an office-based setting. The device, the TEP Measurement And Insertion Device (TEP MAID™), can be used for TEP creation, as well as sizing and insertion of the voice prosthesis in a single-stage procedure. Preliminary results from the first-in-human trial with the manual MAID™ have confirmed its utility, with the patient capable of voicing upon completion of the procedure.

The team will further validate the manual TEP MAID™ system and in parallel, refine the electromechanical version which will minimise user assembly and manipulations to provide a closed and integrated solution for the end user.

Project Deliverables

Completion of the clinical trials for the manual TEP MAID™ to further ensure its safety and effectiveness and the refinement of and in vivo trials of an electromechanical version of the device.
